Topic 14- Math in the Virtual World

Math is one of those subject that I always find hard to integrate technology into. Although over the past few years I have found it easier and easier with the tools provided to me.
I began by having my students make a PowerPoint about how they would spend twenty dollars. Students would have to search the Internet to find at least three things they would want to buy with their $20. If the students still had money to spend, then they could buy more. The students then had to find how much money they had left and write a word problem to describe what they bought. The students love this project and always seem to gather a true understanding of money while doing it.
With the adoption of the new textbook, came loads and loads of new technology-based curriculum to integrate into what you were doing. I still believe that pencil and paper is very important as well as working with manipulatives and doing hands on projects, but the virtual tools are pretty awesome too. The kids love them as well!
Kids are able to make geometric shapes, change clocks and see digital and analog clocks change simultaneously. Teachers are able to teach with mini videos, show students how to break a ten into ones with a touch of a mouse and many other visual effects that make learing fun!
