I think all educators agree that communication is one of the most important aspects of our job. It amazes me how much communication has changed in the short six years that I have been teaching. Today I am able to talk with my parents anytime I need to and they are able to get in touch with me as well.
My first means of communication is e-mail. I able to send updates, notices, or just a short note about daily behavior if I need to. E-mail also allows me to send pictures, assignments, reminders, or notes with a few clicks of the mouse. Parents are able to check in with me on a daily basis and I can respond when the time is best for me. Parents can also alert me instantly of changed plans or a sick child. E-mail has made communication between me and my parents so much easier. I feel as though I know them better and have a better relationship with them.
Two other means of communication that I have used recently for updates and instant communication are Twitter and text messaging. I will give short updates and or assignment information on my Twitter page and parents will text me questions or messages for the next day or questions about homework. It makes it easy on me to respond without calling or getting onto e-mail. I know communication will continue to change from year to year and things will be easier and more open. It makes my life so much easier!
