I was trying to think of a way to communicate with the parents in my class besides updating a website (which I have tried and was not very successful at) or sending mass e-mails weekly.
Twitter is a way to send quick, short messages from my computer or even my phone to share with the parents what was going on in the classroom. Since so much of my grading and school work is now exploration and observation, parents are not seeing as many worksheets coming home. They want to know what going on in the classroom, but when the kids get picked up I always hear the parents ask, "How was your day, what did you learn?" and often times my students will say "nothing." I know this is a typical kids response, but I want the parents to know that there is learning going on and to give them quick ideas on how to work with their student at home on what we are learning in class.
I have tweeted only a few times and have about 1/3 of my class following me. Hopefully the word will start spreading and I will have more participation at the end of the next six weeks. This is a new adventure for me and I hope it is a successful one.
